How to Use AI to Generate ESL Activities for Adults

Mar 5, 2026·5 min read

Last month I watched an experienced teacher hand a 42-year-old accountant from Guatemala a worksheet about "My Family Pet." He looked at it, looked at me (I was observing), and looked back at the sheet. The resignation on his face said everything.

Adult ESL activities need to treat adults like adults. That shouldn't be controversial, but finding level-appropriate material that doesn't feel infantile is surprisingly hard. AI tools can fix this -- if you prompt them right.

What Makes Adult ESL Activities Different

Adults don't want stickers. They don't care about cartoon characters. What they want:

  • Topics they can use at work tomorrow morning
  • Activities that respect their professional expertise
  • Practice scenarios based on real adult situations -- banking, healthcare, workplace conflicts
  • No games that feel like elementary school (though some competitive activities are fine -- adults like winning too)

Prompt Examples That Generate Good Adult Activities

The key is specificity. Compare these two prompts:

Bad prompt: "Create an ESL speaking activity for adults."

Good prompt: "Create a 15-minute role-play activity for B1 adult ESL learners. Scenario: a tenant calling their landlord to report a maintenance issue. Include 8 key vocabulary items, a sample dialogue, and 3 variation scenarios."

The second prompt tells the AI exactly what context, level, format, and scope you need. The output is usable. The first prompt gives you something generic about "discussing hobbies."

Tools That Handle Adult ESL Activities Well

Twee -- The dialogue generator is perfect for adult scenarios. I've used it to create conversations about salary negotiation, doctor's appointments, parent-teacher conferences, and apartment viewings. Specify the CEFR level and the scenario, and the output is realistic and usable.

MagicSchool AI -- Select "adult learners" as your audience and the tone shifts noticeably. The vocabulary choices are more professional, the scenarios are workplace-relevant, and the activities avoid anything that feels childish.

ChatGPT -- With the right prompt, ChatGPT generates excellent adult ESL activities. Add this to any prompt: "The learners are working professionals aged 25-50. Use workplace and daily life scenarios only. Avoid anything that could feel childish or condescending."

Adult ESL activities succeed when students think "I need this" instead of "Why are we doing this?" AI can generate the right scenarios -- you just have to tell it who your students actually are.

5 Activity Types That Work for Adult ESL

  • Workplace role-plays: Generated in Twee with specific job contexts
  • Problem-solving tasks: "Your flight is cancelled. Call the airline." -- AI generates the scenario and vocabulary
  • Information gap activities: AI creates two versions of a text with different details missing
  • News discussion: Use Diffit to level a current news article, then generate discussion questions
  • Email/message writing: AI generates a scenario and students write the response
