Mar 5, 2026·7 min read

This is the article I wish existed when I started teaching ESL. Every tool I've tested, organized by what it does, with honest notes on what works and what doesn't. Bookmark it. Share it with your department. Come back when you need something new.

Lesson Planning

  • ChalkLab -- ESL-specific lesson plan generator. My #1 recommendation for planning. Free and paid tiers. Understands CEFR levels, communicative methodology, and the specific structure ESL lessons need.
  • MagicSchool AI -- 60+ educational AI tools. Broad but not ESL-specific. Generous free tier. Good for teachers who also teach other subjects.
  • Planboard -- Calendar-based lesson planner. Free. Doesn't generate content but keeps plans organized and shareable.

Reading Materials

  • Diffit -- Leveled reading generator. Paste any URL or topic, get a simplified version with vocabulary and comprehension questions. Essential.
  • News in Levels -- Daily news at three reading levels. Free. Updated consistently.
  • CommonLit -- Literary and informational texts. Free for teachers. Better for academic ESL programs.

Dialogues and Speaking Content

  • Twee -- Generates dialogues, discussion questions, and vocabulary exercises. Built for English teachers. Free and paid.
  • Flip (Flipgrid) -- Async video discussion platform. Students record responses. Free with Microsoft account.
  • Speakable -- Structured speaking assessment with timestamped feedback. Paid.

Games and Review

  • Blooket -- Game-based review. Multiple game modes. No student accounts. Free tier works for most teachers.
  • Wordwall -- 18+ game types from one word set. 5 free activities then paid. Extremely versatile.
  • Quizizz -- Self-paced quiz games. Code entry. Clean interface. Free tier is generous.
  • Quizlet -- Flashcard-based study and live games. The "Quizlet Live" mode is great for team-based vocabulary review.

Worksheets

  • ChalkLab -- Generates vocabulary, grammar, and reading worksheets at any level.
  • ISLCollective -- 200K+ teacher-made resources. Free with account.
  • BusyTeacher -- 30K+ free printable worksheets.
  • Canva (Education) -- Design worksheets with templates. AI text and image generation built in.

Classroom Management

  • Classroomscreen.com -- Timer, noise meter, random picker, work symbols. Free. Open it every class.
  • ClassDojo -- Grouping, participation tracking, multilingual parent communication. Free.
  • Google Classroom -- Assignment distribution and organization. Free.

Assessment

  • Google Forms -- Auto-graded quizzes. Free. Sufficient for most vocabulary and grammar checks.
  • GoFormative -- Real-time student response tracking. Free tier available.
  • Edpuzzle -- Video-based assessment. Embed questions into any video. Free tier.
