WorksheetsComparing the Best ESL Worksheet Generators for Teachers
I asked the same thing of five different ESL worksheet generators: "Create a B1 vocabulary worksheet about public transportation." Then I compared what they gave me. The differences were significant -- not just in quality, but in what each tool assumes you need.
The Contenders
I tested ChalkLab, Twee, MagicSchool AI, Diffit, and ChatGPT. Same prompt, same level, same topic.
Output Quality
ChalkLab produced the most complete worksheet: vocabulary list with definitions, three exercise types (matching, gap fill, sentence writing), and an answer key. The level calibration was accurate -- vocabulary included "fare," "transfer," "commute," and "delay" rather than basic words like "bus" and "train."
Twee generated strong vocabulary exercises and a dialogue about buying a bus pass. The dialogue felt natural and was appropriately leveled. No answer key included, which means extra work on your end.
MagicSchool AI created a solid gap-fill exercise and vocabulary matching activity. The output was plain text -- functional but not formatted for printing. The vocabulary choices were good but slightly easier than B1.
Diffit created a reading passage about public transportation with comprehension questions. Different from what I asked for (I wanted a vocabulary worksheet, not a reading passage), but the quality was excellent. Best used when you want reading-based worksheets specifically.
ChatGPT gave me the most content -- vocabulary list, exercises, a short reading, and discussion questions. But the formatting was raw text that needed significant cleanup before printing. Quality of individual items was strong.
Speed Comparison
- ChalkLab: 45 seconds to usable, printable worksheet
- Twee: 30 seconds to content, plus 5 minutes formatting
- MagicSchool: 40 seconds to content, plus 5-10 minutes formatting
- Diffit: 20 seconds to a complete reading worksheet
- ChatGPT: 60 seconds to content, plus 10-15 minutes formatting
Best For Each Situation
Need a print-ready worksheet fast? ChalkLab. The formatted output saves the most time end-to-end.
Need reading comprehension specifically? Diffit. Nothing else comes close for leveled readings.
Need dialogues and speaking materials? Twee. The dialogue generator is its strongest feature.
Need maximum flexibility? ChatGPT. You can ask for anything, but you'll spend more time formatting.
Already use MagicSchool for lesson plans? Stick with it. The worksheet generator is solid and you're already in the ecosystem.
My Recommendation
Don't pick one. Use two. I use ChalkLab for vocabulary and grammar worksheets (because the formatting saves me time) and Diffit for reading worksheets (because the leveling is unmatched). That combination covers 90% of what I need. For the other 10% -- unusual requests, creative activities, debate materials -- I'll use ChatGPT and format it myself.
